The existing and yet to be uncovered wonders of artificial intelligence may have left many of us with a bitter sweet impression after reading the research paper by researchers Emma Strubell, Aranya Ganesh, and Andrew McCallum from UMass Amherst (pre print research paper).
Revealing that the process of training AI models to make sense of human language (take for example Amazon’s voice assistant Alexa or Google’s translator) has a colossal carbon footprint, the question we should all have on our lips is can humanity afford such environmental cost ?
As AI is predicted to reshape labor markets, manufacturing, agricultural production, mobility, the military etc.. the results of such research is a reminder that the world does need a breed of leaders in the capacity to grasp the full spectrum of AI impact on our lives.
